I built this based on a design Ianto Evans came up with for a more efficient way for West Africans to cook over a wood fire. I tailored it for a stew pot we’d bought at the Kaolack market in Senegal, but I didn’t execute the design well and it smoked too much with the pot on. It ended up being a great little campfire pit, though, perfect for one to four people. I added some height to it, and it burned really nicely with little smoke. And it kept its heat a long time after the fire burned down to embers. The cob warmed up just enough that you could warm your bare feet on it without burning them. Unfortunately, a cow stepped on it and destroyed it. I’m designing a new, improved version in my head.
