Writing & Earthen Building

The Fairy House

This was built with left-over cob when I had some time to kill. I thought the kids would find it fun, and when we visited I brought some Smurfs for them to put in there. They had no interest in the Smurfs. Instead, they put it to use as a mausoleum for old, bleached cow bones.

A couple hours after I built it I showed pictures to my friend Harriet, who said, “You’re having fun.” It was an odd thing to say, but I guess she saw something I hadn’t. I’d been depressed for four years–ever since catching a virus in Senegal and losing my mom–and “fun” hadn’t been part of my vocabulary.
